Big Win For The Bears

This past weekend was a big test for the Ohio Northern Football Team. Our big test was playing our rival Heidelberg. This is a game that ONU has not won much in recent years. This was a big test to see where we are this year and make a statement in conference play. We knew that most people did not expect us to win but we have that confidence that we can compete with any team.

The game between us and Heidelberg is not just a game but also has a special meaning. It is called the Bendo Bowl and is named after two brothers who tragically died within a few years of each other. One was a coach here at ONU and the other at Heidelberg. A coach on our staff worked closely with one of the brothers and he talked about it the day before our game and really gave us a motive to want to win. He told us to find our motivation and take it on the field with us.

Going into the game we started off strong and would be up by a couple points at the half. We knew that coming out of the half we needed to keep our foot on the gas and keep playing hard. We had some tough losses as two players had got a targeting penalty and had to sit out the rest of the game. We came out of the half and continued to play hard. We would not let up and we would end up winning 52-27.

As a team, we feel that this was a big win for the program going forward and makes a statement in the OAC. We know that we are not done yet and that we need to continue working hard each and every week. No game can be taken lightly and we need to prepare for every game the same. Although this was a big win for the Bears we look to continue to keep the streak this Saturday for homecoming!

  1. This was a great win for ONU! Winning the first conference game is huge for any team, especially a team playing from behind like ONU. And the story behind the Bendo Bowl really is tragic. I work in the Sports Information Department here at ONU, so my boss knew the coach and was telling me about him. It's a great thing to have this game in remembrance of them!

  2. I’m really happy to see you guys finding success on the field! I know how much hard work you all have put in and how tough it’s been these past few seasons when things didn’t go as planned. I’m rooting for you all as always and looking forward to seeing what you can accomplish this year, especially with the new coaching staff. My teammates and I will do our best to make it to as many games as we can to support you!
