Podcast

Often when we talk about social media in class, I connect it to social media in the sports industry. I do this because this is what I consume when I am on social media. I also do this because I one day want to do social media for a professional sports team one day. After being asked to create a podcast on social media, I knew I would cover the topic of social media in the world of sports.

For my podcast, I was able to have Chase Coburn on. Chase is a student here at Ohio Northern and has worked with both the football and lacrosse teams and helped run and create content for their social media. He also currently is an intern for the Premier Lacrosse League.

My first question for Chase was what got him into doing social media for sports teams. He told me that he always saw the graphics that sports teams would post and he was always interested in sports media. He also talked about how he was an athlete in high school and it was a way for him to stay connected to sports.

I then asked how working with both the lacrosse and football teams here has helped in his journey. He said that it helped him learn to work with a team and to also do it on his own. He also said that there was a lot of trial and error throughout the process.

We then talked about the difference between him doing lacrosse and football and which he enjoyed more. He said that even though he knew more about football than lacrosse he found himself enjoying lacrosse more because of the pace of the game.

We also talked about his internship with the Premier Lacrosse League. He told me that it has been a good experience and it is mostly remote. He said he enjoys how fast-paced it is compared to D3 sports.

A key thing that we talked about in the interview is the negative impact that social media can have on athletes. We talked about how prominent social media is for athletes especially in college now with NIL. Lots of these athletes use social media to market themselves which leads to them being more in the public eye. This has its positives but also comes with the negatives. When an athlete has a bad game we see many fans will go and attack players on social media bashing them after a bad play or game. I asked him what solutions he thinks there are and he said turning comments off seems to be an effective strategy for many athletes.

Comments

  1. This is very useful information, thank you for sharing! I think that social media can be a double edged knife for athletes. It is unfortunate that athletes feel the need to disable comments on their posts because of all the harsh things that some players will receive after a bad game or performance.

  2. Very interesting to hear about his lacrosse experience as a past player. He is obviously very talented and an expert in what he does. I also thought his opinion on social medias negative impact on athletes was interesting as I had not heard much about it.
