Finish The Season Off Strong
On Saturday, we played a big game against Mount Union. We knew it would be a challenge, but it also presented a huge opportunity. The opportunity was to beat the #3 team in the nation and end a 70-game regular-season win streak. We started the first half off strong and would go into halftime only down 14-7. We were able to get a lot of stops on defense and get some offense going. We knew that our defense needed to limit our mistakes and the offense needed to come out strong in the second half. We continued to make stops throughout the third quarter but we unfortunately could not get much offense going. The fourth quarter came around and the mistakes continued to hinder our performance and we would ultimately lose 42-13.
This upcoming Saturday we have another big challenge in John Carrol. John Carrol started off the season 0-2 to two very good teams in Wisconsin Whitewater and Mount Union. After that, they have since not lost a game and are sitting at 4-2 and second in our conference. They are a well-coached and physical team and have had success against us in recent years. We know that going into the game we must be disciplined and execute our gameplan well if we want to win the game. Another big component of the game is our former head coach is now a coach at John Carrol. This will bring another aspect to this game as he was a long-time head coach for over 20 years and this will be his return to Ohio Northern.
Looking ahead after this game we have Balwin Wallace and Otterbein who are two teams that were believe are beatable. If we win this Saturday and win the next two we have the chance to go 7-3 which would be the best record that we have had since I have been here. It would also be the best record that we have had in years. Winning Saturday would send a statement to the conference and set us up well to finish the season off strong.
It hurts me to say that we also lost a tough game this past weekend to Mount Union, finishing 2-1. Leading up to the game, I could only imagine the pressure you all must have felt facing a team with that pedigree and history. When our game ended, the scoreboard at D.R showed 14-7 in Mount's favor, and I was hopeful you would push through and come out on top. I wish you and the team good luck in your game against John Carroll this upcoming weekend!
