Social Dilemma
In the last class, we started the movie Social Dilemma. I was not familiar with the movie, so I was excited to start it and see what it was all about. So far, the movie has definitely been an eye-opener. I say this because of all the new things and perspectives the movie has shown me about social media. There are a lot of things that we do not realize about social media when we pick it up on the daily.
The movie starts off with former employees of big companies such as Google, Facebook, Instagram, etc. They talk about how working with these companies was and how at times they felt that what they were doing was not the most ethical way to go about things. They talked about how many of the companies would implement new tactics to keep the users on the apps longer and longer. Many of the employees felt that the platforms were already addictive and that they should be trying to limit this addiction rather than add to it. Some employees even talked about their own addictions to some of these platforms.
The movie also adds another aspect of a family that has their own addictions to their phones. It focuses on a boy who is addicted to his phone and is always on it. They also show how social media continues to keep him coming back to the apps by beeping his phone and sending him alerts. It shows how the platforms today keep you coming back and engaging on their app.
Overall so far I would say that the movie has been good and also been an eye-opener. I would recommend it to people who would also feel that they are constantly on these platforms. It shows a perspective that is not often talked about and I belive should be talked about more. I look forward to continuing the movie and learning more about social media!
I found the movie very eye-opening as well! After stepping back and looking at the problem from a broader perspective, I would say I’m addicted to my phone. Since watching it, I’ve been trying to find ways to limit my screen time. The method I’ve found most successful is setting a limit on how much I use TikTok. It has been by far my most-used platform, and my goal is to reduce how much I use it compared to the past.
