TikTok
TikTok is an app that many of us know and love. TikTok is an app that has affected my generation greatly and is one of the most used apps today. It is an app that I find myself constantly picking up and endlessly scrolling. It has attracted many users as it is very similar to a former popular app named Vine. Vine was an app that had the same format as TikTok and would be filled with many funny and entertaining short clips. After the app Vine shut down in 2017, it left many people looking for an app to fill that void. I believe that TikTok was the app to do this and why it was able to explode onto the scene.
TikTok is a video-sharing social media platform used to make various videos that can last up to ten minutes. TikTok is owned by a Chinese company Bytedance and was initially released in China in 2016 attracting over 100 million users in just a year. It became available worldwide in August 2018 when the Chinese social media service and Musicla.ly merged. By October of the same year, it would become the world's third-most-downloaded app. As of 2024, the platform reported over 1.56 billion monthly active users worldwide and ranked 5th among all social media platforms.
When it comes to marketing TikTok is still in its early stages compared to other social media platforms. Even with marketing on the app being in its early stages, it has quickly become a vital tool for businesses looking to reach younger audiences and build their brand. Today thousands of leading brands are leveraging TikTok to grow their business and uniquely connect with consumers. According to TikTok active brands are receiving 200,000 views per post with an engagement rate of 9%. These numbers far exceed other social media platforms making it a powerful tool for brands. While marketers may think that TikTok will only increase exposure among a younger audience, the platform growth is attracting a large audience of all ages.
I believe that marketers can utilize TikTok to reach many audiences and reach their consumers in ways that other platforms do not allow them to. TikTok also has recently put in the TikTok shop. The TikTok shop allows its users to buy products right off of the app and many smaller brands have begun utilizing this and have found success. As TikTok continues to grow I believe that larger brands will begin taking advantage of the TikTok shop. I believe that TikTok will only continue to grow as a social media platform and that many brands will start to utilize it as a vital tool for marketing.
I consider myself late to the TikTok hype because I originally thought it was an app only for posting and watching dances. Nowadays, TikTok is my most-used app and by far my favorite platform. I often fall into a TikTok rabbit hole and scroll for long stretches of time. With its mix of snackable content and a For You page tailored to my interests, it's safe to say that TikTok has become my go-to platform!
