YouTube was founded in 2005 by Hurley, Chen, and Karim. They founded YouTube after they had difficulty sharing a video that they created at a dinner party. Google was eventually acquired by Google in 2006 for over $1.65 billion. With over 2.49 billion monthly active users watching over 5 billion videos on the platform every single day, YouTube is the most popular online video-sharing website and the second most visited site in the world.
Video marketing has begun to take over the world and YouTube is at the front of this revolution. Brands are continuously making content on YouTube and running video ads to help drive engagement to reach their target audience. 90% of the top 500 brands have at least one active YouTube channel. This is not just limited to a certain business category. All different types of brands have a significant presence on the platform with millions of subscribers.
The primary key to success with YouTube is optimizing each video to gain the most views. The first way to help optimize content on YouTube is to use keywords. What keywords or phrases would be used to help find your video. Adding these keywords to the title and description is important. A second way to help optimize your content is your title. Video titles should entice users to want to watch the video. Using a title that uses keywords and isn't very long is key to creating a good title. A good thumbnail will also help you optimize your content on the platform. The thumbnail is the first element that catches the eye of potential viewers.
In 2022 with over 4000 brands spending over $500 million on sponsored videos, YouTube has proven to be an effective way to reach audiences. According to YouTube marketers have the potential to reach over 2 billion individuals aged 18 and above. The platform is an effective way to reach global audiences as it is the second-largest search engine and the second-most visited website. YouTube allows for highly targeted advertising as brands can choose to display their ads to specific demographics, interests and search terms.
YouTube is a platform that I have been able to see grow over the years. It is a platform that I and many people I know go to very often. Whether it is to look up how to do something or watch something entertaining the platform has it all. This is why I believe the platform has grown so much and I believe that it will only continue to get bigger.
Crazy that Google acquired YouTube for what nowadays would be an absolute bargain! It is definitely one of my favorite platforms to use although I do not use it in a marketing sense.
